Because whales deserve a respectful approach

Menu

Respectful whale watching from CADAQUÈS (SPAIN)

We are a global environmental organization dedicated to the protection of cetaceans through the listing of eco-responsible and respectful whale watching operators.

Increase your chances of spotting cetaceans with non-aggressive approaches by marine biologists and naturalists.

Unstressed animals are easier to observe, in a calm and respectful atmosphere.

By observing whales and dolphins with operators approved by Shelltone Whale Project, you are helping to protect them at no extra cost to you.

The Shelltone team's opinion

Cadaqués is our experimental research base.

The underwater canyon at Cap de Creus is the ideal setting for studying respectful and non-intrusive techniques for approaching cetaceans.

Because dolphin and whale watching can be done in a respectful way and these techniques can be improved, this is our mission and our passion.

The Cap de Creus Natural Park offers an exceptional field of study. This unspoilt, wild and unpredictable place is home to an underwater canyon that stretches from the cliffs to over 30 miles offshore, reaching a depth of 2,000 meters. A true ecological corridor, it constitutes a unique ecosystem where hundreds of marine, plant and animal species cohabit.

For us, this is the ideal setting for studying respectful and non-intrusive approach techniques. Observing cetaceans can and must be done with total respect for their freedom and habitat. These practices can be perfected, shared, and passed on. This is our mission. It is also what drives us deeply.

This canyon is a unique eco-system, home to hundreds of species of marine plants and animals.

Among the many marine species present in the canyon, two families of dolphins are resident here: the Tursiops truncatus, close to the coast, and Stenella coeruleoalba, which can be seen further offshore. This underwater corridor is also a regular stopover for fin whales, the sperm whales and other large deep-sea cetaceans.

To date, no other scientific or tourist organization visits this canyon as regularly and with as much commitment as we do.

Since 2021, our ongoing presence has enabled us to better understand the richness of this ecosystem and to monitor its evolution with total respect for living organisms.

This canyon has become our open-air laboratory. The cetaceans we encounter here are entirely wild, living far from any human interaction. Human activity is extremely limited, reduced to a few trawlers which the animals instinctively avoid.

Our outings at sea enable us to test, evaluate and refine ethical, respectful and non-intrusive approach techniques. These experiments feed our expertise and enable us to pass on our methods to partner whale watching bases that we select in other parts of the world.

The Cadaqués base thus embodies the heart of our mission: a space for observation, innovation and sharing.

Dolphin and whale watching trip in Cadaqués

A respectful and intimate approach

Limited to 10 passengers, our expedition offers you an intimate and respectful experience, far from the crowds. This conscious approach ensures a moment of sharing and discovery with the utmost respect for the animals and their natural habitat.

The Cadaqués base is our scientific research base, unlike our other bases around the world where cetacean sightings are guaranteed 90 to 100% of the time. At the Cap de Creus canyon, we have a 50% chance of seeing cetaceans.

If you think you won't be able to handle your frustration in the event that we don't encounter any cetaceans, it's best not to accompany us on our mission.

However, this is a completely different experience. Here, we invite you to participate in the search for animals as if you were a member of the research team., As soon as we are at sea, we explain our approach step by step to try to find the animals, and you learn all the techniques for searching for cetaceans in real time.. So, even though it is more difficult to observe them than elsewhere, encountering them is all the more extraordinary and emotionally charged, as we experience it on a daily basis.
