Respectful whale watching from Madeira (Portugal)
We are a global environmental organization dedicated to the protection of cetaceans through the listing of eco-responsible and respectful whale watching bases.
Increase your chances of spotting cetaceans with non-aggressive approaches by marine biologists and naturalists.
Unstressed animals are easier to observe, in a calm and respectful atmosphere.
By observing whales and dolphins with operators approved by Shelltone Whale Project, you are helping to protect them at no extra cost to you.
The Shelltone team's opinion
The Madeira archipelago is a great destination for cetacean watching, being both close to Europe and fortunate enough to be on the migration routes of various whales. Over 28 species of cetacean have been recorded here. They can be seen every month of the year, with peak numbers from April to September.
All year round, dolphins, sperm whales and pilot whales are the most common sightings.
From March to April and September to October, humpback whales take a break during their migrations. The base we have referenced here respects the animals and practices responsible whale watching. Marine biologists are on board each boat for every outing, commenting on sightings.
This base is a perfect example of the future of respectful and authentic whale watching.
The cetacean enthusiasts selected by the Shelltone team in Madeira have chosen the RESPECT.
