The Shelltone Team’s Review

Guadeloupe holds a special place in the history of the Shelltone Whale Project.

It was in the waters of the Agoa Sanctuary, the French Marine Protected Area of the Caribbean, that many of the reflections that eventually shaped our approach to respectful whale watching gradually took form.

More than twenty species of marine mammals inhabit the Agoa Sanctuary. Throughout the year, it is possible to encounter sperm whales, Atlantic spotted dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, Fraser’s dolphins, pilot whales, false killer whales, beaked whales, and many other species. From January through mid-May, humpback whales also return to the warm waters of the Caribbean to breed and raise their calves.

We selected this team because it continues the spirit in which this base was originally developed. Trained in cetacean observation and the principles of respectful whale watching by Pierre Lavagne de Castellan, founder of the Shelltone Whale Project, the team continues to build its work on a deep knowledge of the animals, extensive field experience, and respect for their natural behaviour.

Beyond the exceptional diversity of species that can be observed here, what we particularly appreciate is the relationship that has been built over the years with this territory, its wildlife, and the people who dedicate themselves to observing it. That continuity has become one of the greatest strengths of this destination.

The Shelltone Team’s Review

What we particularly appreciate here is that, beyond being a remarkable destination for observing cetaceans, Guadeloupe is also a place of learning. A place that reminds us that respect for animals does not emerge from a rulebook, but from years of observation, listening, and presence alongside the living world.

Dolphin and whale watching in Deshaies (Guadeloupe)

aboard the NADJA, a comfortable and spacious boat designed for observation, see photo gallery below.

You are welcomed on board to share passion for cetaceans and navigation at sea.

Every time out, the captain uses a hydrophone (underwater microphone) and deciphers the sounds heard in the sea: whale songs, sperm whale codas, dolphin and pilot whale whistles. These sounds, heard live, help him decide which way the boat should go to give himself the best possible navigation. the best chance of observing animals while respecting their behaviour during the meeting.

Your participation in these outings helps finance our research and our mission. By choosing our organization, you are actively contributing to the protection of cetaceans and the promotion of sustainable and ethical tourism.
