C\u2019est \u00e0 Maui, Hawaii, en 1981, que Pierre Lavagne de Castellan a pour la premi\u00e8re fois rencontr\u00e9 les Koholas, les baleines chanteuses, gardiennes de l\u2019Oc\u00e9an.\u00a0<\/strong>Cette rencontre allait marquer le d\u00e9but d\u2019une aventure unique, \u00e0 la crois\u00e9e de la science, de la musique et du respect des c\u00e9tac\u00e9s.<\/p>\n

Pour comprendre le message des baleines, il faut descendre sous l\u2019eau jouer avec elles, c\u2019est dessous que \u00e7a se passe, dans l\u2019\u00e9change de notes, de musique, de sons, l\u00e0 dans ce partage, c\u2019est l\u00e0 que l\u2019on commence \u00e0 percevoir le message contenu dans leur chant.<\/p>\n

Jouer de la musique avec des baleines depuis un bateau ne permet qu\u2019une relation distante, il n\u2019y a aucun contact, aucun \u00e9change physique, aucune \u00e9motion partag\u00e9e.<\/p>\n

Tenter de comprendre leur langage depuis un bateau, en se contentant de plonger un hydrophone dans l\u2019eau et de d\u00e9crypter les sons sur un ordinateur, en \u00e9tant de plus assist\u00e9 par l\u2019intelligence artificielle, c\u2019est un peu comme tenter de communiquer avec les yeux et le c\u0153ur grand ferm\u00e9s.<\/p>\n

Quand on joue de la musique avec une baleine \u00e0 bosse, sous l\u2019eau, \u00e0 ses c\u00f4t\u00e9s, quand on la sent se rapprocher doucement pour mieux percevoir la vibration et l\u2019\u00e9motion que votre corps et votre c\u0153ur \u00e9mettent, on touche l\u2019essentiel, le partage absolu, et soudainement on r\u00e9alise que son \u0153il immense est \u00e0 moins d\u2019un m\u00e8tre de nos propres yeux et on se sent aspir\u00e9 dans les profondeurs de ce regard, l\u00e0 on commence \u00e0 comprendre qu\u2019elle nous offre l\u2019acc\u00e8s \u00e0 son \u00e2me.<\/p>\n

En 2002, Pierre Lavagne de Castellan a con\u00e7u le Shelltone, un instrument r\u00e9volutionnaire pens\u00e9 sp\u00e9cifiquement pour jouer sous l\u2019eau. Apr\u00e8s deux ans de recherche entre l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de Stanford en Californie et le laboratoire acoustique de l\u2019\u00c9cole Centrale de Nantes, le Shelltone a vu le jour.<\/p>\n

Fascinated by the song of humpback whales<\/strong>, Pierre was captivated by the exceptional quality of their music: complex harmonies, unheard-of tessitura, and a deep sense that these songs had a meaning, a specific purpose, perhaps even a spiritual dimension. It was obvious that these melodies didn't just exist to please the human ear; they played an essential role in the lives of these marine giants<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Early Research<\/h1>\n

To understand the message of whales, you have to go underwater and play music with them. That is where it happens, beneath the surface, in the exchange of notes, music and sounds. It is within this sharing that we begin to perceive the message contained in their song.<\/p>

Playing music with whales from a boat only allows for a distant relationship. There is no contact, no physical exchange, no shared emotion.<\/p>

Trying to understand their language from a boat, simply by lowering a hydrophone into the water and decoding sounds on a computer, even with the assistance of artificial intelligence, is a little like trying to communicate with your eyes and your heart wide shut.<\/p>

When you play music with a humpback whale underwater, at her side, when you feel her slowly moving closer in order to better perceive the vibration and emotion emitted by your body and your heart, you touch something essential, a moment of absolute sharing, and suddenly you realize that her immense eye is less than a meter from your own, and you feel yourself drawn into the depths of that gaze. The creation of Shelltone<\/h1>\n

In 2002, Pierre Lavagne de Castellan designed the Shelltone, a revolutionary musical instrument created specifically to be played underwater. After two years of research conducted between Stanford University in California and the Acoustic Laboratory of \u00c9cole Centrale de Nantes in France, the Shelltone was born.<\/p>

This instrument enabled Pierre Lavagne de Castellan to experience the first true underwater musical interactions between a human and a humpback whale, opening the way to a new form of interspecies communication, the only one truly possible, eye to eye.<\/p>\n\"\"\n
