Depuis plusieurs d\u00e9cennies, nos recherches et notre exp\u00e9rience de terrain nous ont conduit \u00e0 une conclusion simple : plus une approche respecte les c\u00e9tac\u00e9s, plus la rencontre a de chances d\u2019\u00eatre authentique.<\/p>\n

C\u2019est sur ce principe qu\u2019est n\u00e9e la Charte d\u2019Approche du Shelltone Whale Project.<\/p>\n

Cette charte d\u00e9finit les comportements que nous consid\u00e9rons comme respectueux du bien-\u00eatre des animaux et constitue l\u2019un des crit\u00e8res utilis\u00e9s pour s\u00e9lectionner les op\u00e9rateurs r\u00e9f\u00e9renc\u00e9s sur notre site.<\/p>\n

Les r\u00e8gles \u00e0 respecter<\/h1> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

1 \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0L\u2019approche des c\u00e9tac\u00e9s doit \u00eatre faite a une allure n\u2019exc\u00e9dant pas 5 noeuds avec un angle d\u2019environ 30\u00b0 dans le sens du d\u00e9placement des animaux. Le bateau ne doit pas s\u2019approcher des mammif\u00e8res marins \u00e0 moins de 100 m\u00e8tres et doit s\u2019\u00e9carter imm\u00e9diatement si on constate un changement d\u2019attitude, de vitesse ou de comportement des animaux.

2 \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0Le bateau ne doit jamais faire d\u2019approche par l\u2019avant, l\u2019arri\u00e8re ou perpendiculaire \u00e0 la direction de d\u00e9placement des c\u00e9tac\u00e9s. Il ne faut pas couper le passage des animaux, ne pas traverser un groupe ni de s\u00e9parer des individus du groupe. l\u2019approche se fait en douceur, parall\u00e8lement au groupe observ\u00e9.

3 \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0L\u2019utilisation de sonars ou instruments de type \u00ab fish finder \u00bb pour localiser les animaux est interdite car ces instruments \u00e9mettent des fr\u00e9quences qui d\u00e9rangent la communication des animaux entre eux. \u2022 Pendant l\u2019observation, le bateau doit \u00eatre maintenu \u00e0 une vitesse constante dans une direction parall\u00e8le au d\u00e9placement des animaux. La vitesse maximale ne dois jamais \u00eatre plus rapide que l\u2019animal le plus lent du groupe.

4 \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0Si une baleine s\u2019approche du bateau ou appara\u00eet soudainement \u00e0 moins de 60 m\u00e8tres d\u2019un bateau, le point mort doit \u00eatre engag\u00e9e. Pour les dauphins, une vitesse constante et lente peut \u00eatre maintenue.

5 \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0L\u2019approche et l\u2019observation d\u2019une \u00ab nurserie \u00bb, soit un groupe de b\u00e9b\u00e9s ou juv\u00e9nile encadr\u00e9 par uniquement quelques adultes est interdite.

6 \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0La poursuite de c\u00e9tac\u00e9s pendant une chasse est interdite.

7 \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0Le d\u00e9rangement de groupes actifs de surface lors d\u2019accouplement est interdit.

8 \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0On ne peut pas rester en observation plus de 45 minutes sur le m\u00eame groupe de c\u00e9tac\u00e9s.

9 \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0On \u00e9vitera tout changement de direction brutal ou changement de vitesse durant l\u2019observation. Les animaux seront plus calmes si le bateau maintient une vitesse constante.

  1. Distance minimale de 100 m\u00e8tres :<\/strong> Ne jamais p\u00e9n\u00e9trer dans ce p\u00e9rim\u00e8tre afin d\u2019\u00e9viter de stresser les animaux ou de perturber leurs comportements naturels.<\/li>\n
  2. Pas d\u2019attente ni d\u2019insistance :<\/strong> Ne pas stationner autour des c\u00e9tac\u00e9s dans l\u2019espoir qu\u2019ils se rapprochent. Laisser les animaux d\u00e9cider librement de la distance qu\u2019ils souhaitent \u00e9tablir.<\/li>\n

    Our approach charter<\/h1>\n

    Over the decades, our research and field experience have led us to a simple conclusion: the more an approach respects cetaceans, the greater the opportunity for a meaningful encounter.<\/p>

    It is from this principle that the Shelltone Whale Project Approach Charter was born.<\/p>

    This charter defines the practices we consider respectful of animal welfare and serves as one of the criteria we use when selecting the operators featured on our website.<\/p>

    Rules to follow:<\/h1>\n1 \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0Cetaceans must be approached at a speed not exceeding 5 knots and at an angle of approximately 30\u00b0 in the direction in which the animals are travelling. The vessel must not approach marine mammals within less than 100 metres and must move away immediately if any change in the animals\u2019 attitude, speed or behaviour is observed.

    2 \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0The vessel must never approach cetaceans from the front, from behind or perpendicular to their direction of travel. It must not block the animals\u2019 path, pass through a group or separate individuals from the group. The approach must be slow and gentle, with the vessel travelling parallel to the group being observed.

    3 \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0The use of sonar or fish-finder-type equipment to locate the animals is prohibited, as these devices emit frequencies that can interfere with communication between the animals. During the observation period, the vessel must maintain a constant speed and travel parallel to the animals\u2019 direction of movement. The vessel must never travel faster than the slowest animal in the group.

    4 \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0If a whale approaches the vessel or suddenly appears within 60 metres of it, the engine must be placed in neutral. When dolphins are present, the vessel may maintain a slow and constant speed.

    5 \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0Approaching or observing a \u201cnursery group\u201d, meaning a group of calves or juveniles accompanied by only a few adults, is prohibited.

    6 \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0Pursuing cetaceans while they are hunting or feeding is prohibited.

    7 \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0Disturbing surface-active groups during mating behaviour is prohibited.

    8 \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0Observation of the same group of cetaceans must not exceed 45 minutes.

    9 \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0Sudden changes in direction or speed must be avoided during the observation period. The animals are more likely to remain calm when the vessel maintains a constant speed.

    The Foundations of a Respectful Approach<\/h1>\n

    This diagram illustrates the basic rules for a respectful approach to cetaceans.<\/p>

    1. Minimum distance of 100 meters:<\/strong> Never enter this area to avoid stressing the animals or disrupting their natural behavior.<\/li>
    2. Do not linger or press the issue:<\/strong> Do not hover around cetaceans in the hope that they will approach you. Let the animals freely decide the distance they wish to maintain.<\/li>
