El avistamiento de ballenas ha cambiado profundamente nuestra relaci\u00f3n con ellas.<\/p>\n

Al sustituir gradualmente la caza de ballenas, permiti\u00f3 que millones de personas descubrieran a estos animales en su entorno natural. Fue un avance extraordinario.<\/p>\n

Pero el \u00e9xito del avistamiento de ballenas tambi\u00e9n supuso un nuevo reto.<\/p>\n

Sin embargo, el \u00e9xito del avistamiento de ballenas tambi\u00e9n plante\u00f3 un nuevo reto. Con el paso de los a\u00f1os, el sector se expandi\u00f3 a escala mundial. En algunos destinos, la presi\u00f3n comercial, la competencia entre operadores y las crecientes expectativas de los visitantes fomentaron gradualmente un enfoque centrado en los resultados: ver ballenas, acercarse m\u00e1s a ellas y permanecer m\u00e1s tiempo.<\/p>\n

Desde 1981, mi pasi\u00f3n por los cet\u00e1ceos y mi investigaci\u00f3n sobre la comunicaci\u00f3n entre especies con las ballenas me han llevado a pasar gran parte de mi vida junto a ellas.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

A lo largo de las \u00faltimas d\u00e9cadas, no solo he observado a las ballenas, sino que tambi\u00e9n he sido testigo de la evoluci\u00f3n de nuestra relaci\u00f3n con ellas.<\/p>\n

Recuerdo una \u00e9poca en la que el avistamiento de ballenas era una actividad minoritaria practicada por una peque\u00f1a comunidad de aficionados, naturalistas y cient\u00edficos. Con el paso de los a\u00f1os, he visto c\u00f3mo se ha convertido en una industria mundial, que ofrece a millones de personas la oportunidad de observar a los cet\u00e1ceos en su entorno natural.<\/p>\n

Esta transformaci\u00f3n abri\u00f3 la puerta a experiencias extraordinarias y ayud\u00f3 a innumerables personas a descubrir una conexi\u00f3n m\u00e1s profunda con el mundo viviente. Pero tambi\u00e9n trajo consigo nuevos retos.<\/p>\n

A lo largo de los a\u00f1os, he visto c\u00f3mo muchas organizaciones han contribuido a la protecci\u00f3n de los cet\u00e1ceos mediante el establecimiento de directrices y normativas de aproximaci\u00f3n cada vez m\u00e1s precisas. Su labor es fundamental y ha desempe\u00f1ado un papel importante en la protecci\u00f3n de las poblaciones de ballenas y delfines en todo el mundo.<\/p>\n

Pero mi propia experiencia me llev\u00f3 poco a poco a plantearme una reflexi\u00f3n diferente.<\/p>\n

El respeto no empieza ah\u00ed donde lo exige una norma.<\/p>\n

Todo comienza con la intenci\u00f3n que gu\u00eda nuestro encuentro con el animal.<\/p>\n

Se puede respetar una distancia m\u00ednima de aproximaci\u00f3n sin mostrar un respeto genuino. Por el contrario, algunas de las decisiones m\u00e1s respetuosas no figuran en ninguna normativa.<\/p>\n

Es una cuesti\u00f3n de elecci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n

La decisi\u00f3n de dar m\u00e1s importancia a la calidad de un encuentro que a la proximidad.<\/p>\n

La decisi\u00f3n de aceptar que, a veces, lo mejor es no acercarse.<\/p>\n

La decisi\u00f3n de dejar que el animal elija.<\/p>\n

A lo largo de mis investigaciones y viajes, tambi\u00e9n he conocido a mujeres y hombres que comparten esta visi\u00f3n. Son profesionales comprometidos que se gu\u00edan por el respeto hacia los cet\u00e1ceos, m\u00e1s que por la b\u00fasqueda de encuentros cada vez m\u00e1s espectaculares.<\/p>\n

Profesionales que demuestran cada d\u00eda que es posible vivir encuentros extraordinarios con las ballenas sin poner en peligro su bienestar.<\/p>\n

Since 1981, my passion for cetaceans and my research into interspecies communication with whales have led me to spend a large part of my life alongside them.<\/p>\n

Over the decades, I have not only observed whales. I have also witnessed the evolution of our relationship with them.<\/p>

I remember a time when whale watching was a niche activity practiced by a small community of enthusiasts, naturalists, and scientists. Over the years, I watched it become a global industry, giving millions of people the opportunity to encounter cetaceans in their natural environment.<\/p>

This transformation opened the door to extraordinary experiences and helped countless people discover a deeper connection with the living world. But it also brought new challenges.<\/p>

Over the years, I have seen many organizations contribute to the protection of cetaceans by establishing increasingly precise approach guidelines and regulations. Their work is essential and has played an important role in protecting whale and dolphin populations around the world.<\/p>

But my own experience gradually led me toward a different reflection.<\/p>

Respect does not begin where a rule requires it.<\/p>

It begins in the intention that guides our encounter with the animal.<\/p>

A minimum approach distance can be respected without genuine respect. Conversely, some of the most respectful decisions are not written into any regulation.<\/p>

They are a matter of choice.<\/p>

The choice to value the quality of an encounter over proximity.<\/p>

The choice to accept that sometimes the right decision is not to approach.<\/p>

The choice to let the animal decide.<\/p>

Throughout my research and travels, I have also met women and men who share this vision. Dedicated operators guided by their respect for cetaceans rather than by the pursuit of increasingly spectacular encounters.<\/p>

Professionals who demonstrate every day that extraordinary encounters with whales are possible without compromising their well-being.<\/p>

It was to bring these operators into the spotlight that I created the Shelltone Whale Project.<\/p>
