En 1981, en Haw\u00e1i, vio por primera vez una ballena jorobada y escuch\u00f3 su canto. Desde entonces, ha intentado establecer contacto e iniciar una comunicaci\u00f3n entre especies con ellas, y la m\u00fasica pronto se convirti\u00f3 en una v\u00eda obvia para ello.<\/p>\n

Fund\u00f3 la organizaci\u00f3n sin \u00e1nimo de lucro Shelltone Whale Project, constituida al amparo de la ley francesa de 1901, y obtuvo el reconocimiento de inter\u00e9s p\u00fablico por sus investigaciones en ac\u00fastica subacu\u00e1tica y sus acciones en favor del medio ambiente marino.<\/p>\n

A lo largo de dos a\u00f1os, en el laboratorio de investigaci\u00f3n ac\u00fastica de la \u00c9cole Centrale de Nantes y en la Universidad de Stanford, en California, desarroll\u00f3 el Shelltone, un instrumento de viento que le permite tocar m\u00fasica bajo el agua en el mismo rango que las ballenas jorobadas.<\/p>\n

Desde entonces, ha estado tocando m\u00fasica con ballenas jorobadas, primero en Maui (Haw\u00e1i), luego en el norte de California, pero tambi\u00e9n en Guadalupe y en otros muchos lugares del mundo.<\/p>\n

De estas experiencias surgieron los primeros intercambios musicales submarinos entre el ser humano y los cet\u00e1ceos.<\/p>\n

Jade complet\u00f3 su doctorado en geograf\u00eda, centr\u00e1ndose en la gobernanza de los entornos costeros y marinos, las \u00e1reas marinas protegidas y la relaci\u00f3n entre las actividades humanas y el bienestar de la vida marina, en particular de las ballenas jorobadas.
Su investigaci\u00f3n la ha llevado desde el \u00c1rtico hasta el Mediterr\u00e1neo, combinando el trabajo acad\u00e9mico con exhaustivos estudios etnogr\u00e1ficos de campo. Se licenci\u00f3 en la Universidad Aut\u00f3noma de Barcelona (UAB) y ha colaborado con el Centro de Investigaci\u00f3n del \u00c1rtico en proyectos relacionados con la gobernanza marina y costera.
Jade tambi\u00e9n ha trabajado con la Comisi\u00f3n Europea como experta en gobernanza territorial y sistemas de conocimiento ind\u00edgenas. Colabora en varias iniciativas nacionales e internacionales dedicadas a la alfabetizaci\u00f3n oce\u00e1nica, la participaci\u00f3n ciudadana y el fomento de relaciones m\u00e1s respetuosas con el medio marino. Desde hace m\u00e1s de 25 a\u00f1os, ha guiado a personas y grupos en encuentros con delfines y ballenas en el agua. Lisa vive en Haw\u00e1i, donde organiza regularmente retiros de una semana de duraci\u00f3n para que la gente conozca a nuestros amigos del oc\u00e9ano. Tambi\u00e9n lleva a grupos a Bimini, en las Bahamas, para nadar con delfines, y a la isla de Dominica para estar en contacto con los cachalotes. Como vide\u00f3grafa, su trabajo ha aparecido en diversos documentales, pel\u00edculas y revistas. Es coproductora, junto con Hydee Tehana, de la pel\u00edcula OCEAN.

Pierre Robert de Latour, fundador de la USEA y presidente de la asociaci\u00f3n Orques Sans Fronti\u00e8res.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Es conocido en todo el mundo como \u00abEl susurrador de orcas\u00bb. Autor del \u00e9xito de ventas El hermano de las orcas<\/em> (Gl\u00e9nat \u00c9dition), ha realizado m\u00e1s de 7.500 inmersiones con orcas en libertad, lo que le ha convertido en una referencia internacional en cuanto a su comportamiento. Pierre, el primer hombre en bucear con orcas en aguas \u00e1rticas con un traje de neopreno ligero, ha adquirido unos conocimientos \u00fanicos sobre las orcas y otras 15 especies de mam\u00edferos marinos desde su primera expedici\u00f3n en 1998.<\/p>\n

Comprometido con el respeto a la fauna marina, ha desarrollado metodolog\u00edas responsables para el avistamiento seguro de cet\u00e1ceos, utilizadas por buceadores y patrones de todo el mundo. Pierre es tambi\u00e9n director de Journey to Orca country<\/em> y coproductor de The Orc People<\/em> junto al capit\u00e1n Paul Watson. Es una veterinaria especializada en animales ex\u00f3ticos y salvajes y cuenta con una amplia experiencia cl\u00ednica y etol\u00f3gica, centrada en la observaci\u00f3n del comportamiento y la comunicaci\u00f3n de los animales.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Su trabajo tiene como objetivo fomentar una relaci\u00f3n respetuosa entre los seres humanos y los animales, basada en la interpretaci\u00f3n de se\u00f1ales, la interacci\u00f3n no invasiva y el respeto por los ritmos naturales de cada especie.<\/p>\n

Ha participado en el rescate y la rehabilitaci\u00f3n de mam\u00edferos marinos en las Islas Gal\u00e1pagos y en proyectos de conservaci\u00f3n de tortugas marinas, experiencias que han marcado su enfoque \u00e9tico y pr\u00e1ctico de la conservaci\u00f3n y el trabajo de campo.<\/p>\n

Su carrera comenz\u00f3 en \u00c1frica, donde dirigi\u00f3 un parque nacional. Tras 25 a\u00f1os trabajando con fauna silvestre, ya sea en zool\u00f3gicos o en centros de acogida, sigue teniendo la misma pasi\u00f3n: cuidar de los animales o, al menos, aliviar su sufrimiento. Conoci\u00f3 a Pierre en 2016. Cuando este le cuenta que, para \u00e9l, los cantos de las ballenas son como mantras o el \u00abOm\u00bb de los monjes budistas, sus palabras le despiertan inter\u00e9s. Los cantos de las ballenas van m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de la comunicaci\u00f3n: curan, subliman, purifican. Lori es gu\u00eda de expediciones de avistamiento de cet\u00e1ceos<\/strong>. Creci\u00f3 rodeada de animales, y esta conexi\u00f3n natural con ellos la llev\u00f3 a convertir esto en su vocaci\u00f3n: primero como amazona de alto nivel, luego como cuidadora de animales salvajes; su encuentro con los cet\u00e1ceos en libertad fue toda una revelaci\u00f3n, sobre todo en lo que respecta al sonido. Viaj\u00f3 por todo el mundo durante 10 a\u00f1os para estudiarlos, comprenderlos y protegerlos.<\/p>\n

Para ella, es urgente recuperar la armon\u00eda primordial entre el ser humano, la naturaleza y los animales. Se form\u00f3 como monitora deportiva especializada en actividades acu\u00e1ticas, nataci\u00f3n y relajaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n

En 2018, cre\u00f3 \u00abBreathe & Rebreathe Diving\u00bb, un centro de buceo y avistamiento de ballenas respetuoso con el medio ambiente, que se est\u00e1 convirtiendo en un referente de Shelltone Whale Project, a bordo de su velero C\u00e9tac\u00e9a, dedicado a la protecci\u00f3n de los cet\u00e1ceos del Mediterr\u00e1neo, la investigaci\u00f3n participativa y la bioac\u00fastica marina.<\/p>\n

El firme compromiso de Ren\u00e9 Heuzey con el medio ambiente le llev\u00f3 a pedirle que se convirtiera en embajadora de \u00abUn Oc\u00e9an de Vie\u00bb en la regi\u00f3n de Provenza-Alpes-Costa Azul.<\/p>\n

Dominic, que naci\u00f3 y se cri\u00f3 en Saguenay (Quebec), pas\u00f3 su juventud en Cap Bon D\u00e9sir, observando ballenas en el r\u00edo San Lorenzo y so\u00f1ando con poder nadar con ellas. En 2014, su sue\u00f1o se hizo realidad cuando nad\u00f3 por primera vez con las majestuosas ballenas azules de Sri Lanka.
Gracias a su talento como fot\u00f3grafo, inmortaliza a trav\u00e9s de su objetivo los momentos especiales que pasa con estos gigantes del mar, tan queridos en todo el mundo.<\/p>\n

Fundadora de la asociaci\u00f3n Breach Antilles<\/em> en 2015, trabaja para sensibilizar a los j\u00f3venes desfavorecidos sobre la conservaci\u00f3n de los cet\u00e1ceos y apoya la investigaci\u00f3n cient\u00edfica en bioac\u00fastica y etolog\u00eda.

En colaboraci\u00f3n con expertos como la Dra. Nad\u00e8ge Gandilhon y el profesor Herv\u00e9 Glotin, ha sido coautora de estudios sobre los cantos de las ballenas jorobadas en el Caribe. Navegante experimentada, Cathy gu\u00eda y bucea con orcas en Noruega para ORCA NORWAY y USEA, y comparte su pasi\u00f3n gracias a su t\u00edtulo de instructora de buceo libre obtenido en 2023.<\/p>\n

En 2024, su hijo Robin tom\u00f3 el relevo con \u00abDu Fleuve\u00bb, una base de avistamiento de ballenas respetuosa con el medio ambiente situada en Quebec, que combina la pasi\u00f3n, los hidr\u00f3fonos y el intercambio de observaciones con institutos de investigaci\u00f3n. L\u00e9a ha adquirido un profundo conocimiento de los cet\u00e1ceos, basado en la confianza y el respeto, a lo largo de muchos a\u00f1os en las aguas de Guadalupe.<\/p>\n

Se ha creado una complicidad entre ella y las diferentes especies que estudiamos, sobre todo con los cachalotes a los que ella llama sus \u00abGwo Pwasons\u00bb.<\/p>\n

Es capaz de analizar el comportamiento de las diferentes especies que habitan en las aguas del santuario de Agoa, el espacio marino protegido franc\u00e9s en el que trabajamos, y sabe c\u00f3mo observarlas o interactuar con ellas sin invadir su espacio, con el m\u00e1ximo respeto.<\/p>\n

L\u00e9a es gu\u00eda titulada del santuario de Agoa y ha trabajado como gu\u00eda naturalista en el santuario. Es especialmente sensible a la necesidad de tratar a los cet\u00e1ceos con respeto, tanto durante las misiones cient\u00edficas como en las salidas de avistamiento de cet\u00e1ceos organizadas para grupos de turistas, por lo que su experiencia es muy importante para nuestra organizaci\u00f3n medioambiental.<\/p> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n

Como gestora de la comunidad, Manon es la voz y la imagen del proyecto. Se encarga de gestionar con esmero el contenido de nuestras redes sociales, compartiendo historias cautivadoras e im\u00e1genes inspiradoras. Pierre Lavagne de Castellan<\/h2>

Marine Bioacoustician \u00b7 Ethologist \u00b7 Founder & Director of Research<\/strong><\/p>\n

He met his first humpback whale and listened to its song in Hawaii in 1981. Since then, he has sought to establish contact and initiate inter-species communication with them, and music soon became an obvious avenue.<\/p>

He created the non-profit organization Shelltone Whale Project, under the French law of 1901, and obtained public interest recognition for his research in underwater acoustics and his environmental actions in the marine environment.<\/p>

Over a period of two years, at the acoustic research laboratory of the Ecole Centrale de Nantes and at Stanford University in California, he developed the Shelltone, a wind instrument that enables him to play music underwater in the same range as humpback whales.<\/p>

Since then, he has been playing music with humpback whales, first in Maui Hawaii, then in Northern California, but also in Guadeloupe and various other parts of the world.<\/p>

The first underwater musical exchanges between man and cetaceans were born of these experiences.<\/p>

He continues his personal research into inter-species communication, while contributing his expertise in approaching large cetaceans to the Shelltone Whale Project organization.<\/p>\n

Jade Zoghbi<\/h2>

Geographer \u00b7 Associate Director of Research
<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jade completed her doctorate in geography with a focus on the governance of coastal and marine environments, marine protected areas, and the relationship between human activities and the well-being of marine life, particularly humpback whales.
Her research has taken her from the Arctic to the Mediterranean, combining academic work with extensive ethnographic field studies. She graduated from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and has collaborated with the Arctic Research Center on projects related to marine and coastal governance.
Jade has also worked with the European Commission as an expert on territorial governance and Indigenous knowledge systems. She contributes to several national and international initiatives dedicated to ocean literacy, citizen engagement, and the promotion of more respectful relationships with the marine environment. Passionate about sailing, cultural heritage, and community life, she brings to the Shelltone Whale Project a multidisciplinary perspective that bridges research, conservation, and human connection to the sea.<\/p>\n\"\"\n

Lisa Denning<\/h2>\nLisa Denning is a photographer, videographer, ocean guide and film producer.<\/strong> \u00a0 For over 25 years, she has guided individuals and groups in encounters with dolphins and whales in the water. Lisa is based in Hawaii, where she regularly organizes week-long retreats for people to meet our ocean friends. She also takes groups to Bimini, Bahamas, to swim with dolphins and to the island of Dominica to rub shoulders with sperm whales. As a videographer, her work has been featured in various documentaries, films and magazines. She is co-producer, with Hydee Tehana, of the film OCEAN.

For her, the ocean is home, and she really enjoys putting others in touch with her friends, the dolphins and whales. They call us into the water to be with them, to learn from them and to move towards our greatest joy.<\/p>

Pierre Robert De Latour<\/h2>\n

Pierre Robert de Latour, founder of USEA and president of the association Orques Sans Fronti\u00e8res.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>

He is known worldwide as \u00abThe Orca Whisperer\u00bb. Author of the best-selling Brother of the orcas<\/em>(Gl\u00e9nat \u00c9dition), he has logged over 7,500 dives with free killer whales, becoming an international reference on their behavior. The first man to dive with killer whales in Arctic waters in a light wetsuit, Pierre has acquired unique expertise on killer whales and 15 other marine mammal species since his first expedition in 1998.<\/p>

Committed to respecting marine wildlife, he has developed responsible methodologies for safe encounters with cetaceans, used by divers and skippers worldwide. Pierre is also the director of Journey to Orca country<\/em> and co-producer of The Orc People<\/em> alongside Captain Paul Watson. Silvia P. Botana<\/h2>

Veterinarian \u2013 Professional diver.<\/strong><\/p>

A veterinarian specializing in exotic and wild animals, she has extensive clinical and ethological experience, focusing on the observation of animal behavior and communication.\u00a0<\/p>

His work aims to promote a respectful relationship between humans and animals, based on reading signals, non-invasive interaction, and respect for the natural rhythms of each species.<\/p>

She has participated in the rescue and rehabilitation of marine mammals in the Gal\u00e1pagos Islands and in sea turtle conservation projects, experiences that have shaped her ethical and practical approach to conservation and fieldwork.<\/p>

A lover of the sea and professional diver, she combines her scientific training with a deep connection to the marine environment.\u00a0<\/p>

Norin Chai<\/h2>\n

Wildlife veterinarian<\/strong><\/p>


His career began in Africa, where he managed a national park. After 25 years of working with wildlife, whether in zoos or care centers, he still has the same passion: to care for, or at least relieve, animal suffering. He met Pierre in 2016. When he tells him that, for him, whale songs are like mantras or the \u00abOm\u00bb of Buddhist monks, his words interest him. Whale songs go beyond communication: they heal, they sublimate, they cleanse. Pierre understands this, and his words touch him deeply.<\/p>\n\"\"\n

Lori Piano\u00a0<\/h2>\n

Lori is a guide for cetacean-watching expeditions<\/strong>, She grew up surrounded by animals, and this natural connection with them led her to make it her vocation: first as a top-level horsewoman, then as a wild animal carer, her encounter with free-living cetaceans was a revelation, particularly in terms of sound. She travelled the world for 10 years to study, understand and protect them.<\/p>

For her, it's urgent to reconnect with the primordial harmony between man, nature and animals. She trained as a sports educator specializing in aquatic activities, swimming and relaxation.<\/p>

In 2018, she created \u00abBreathe & Rebreathe Diving\u00bb an eco responsible diving and whale whatching center, which is becoming a Shelltone Whale Project reference, aboard her sailboat C\u00e9tac\u00e9a dedicated to the protection of Mediterranean cetaceans, participatory research and marine bioacoustics.<\/p>

Ren\u00e9 Heuzey's strong commitment to the environment led him to ask her to become an ambassador for \u00abUn Oc\u00e9an de Vie\u00bb in the Provence-Alpes-C\u00f4te d'Azur region.<\/p>

Dominic Dallaire<\/h2>\n

Emergency doctor - Professional underwater cetacean photographer.<\/strong><\/p>

Born and raised in Saguenay, Quebec, Dominic spent his youth at Cap Bon D\u00e9sir, watching whales in the St. Lawrence River and dreaming of being able to swim with them. In 2014, his dream came true when he swam with Sri Lanka's majestic blue whales for the first time.
Using his talents as a photographer, he immortalizes through his lens the special moments he spends with these giants of the seas, so beloved around the world.<\/p>


Through his photos, he aims to raise public awareness of the importance of protecting marine mammals and their habitats around the world.
His knowledge of the gentle approach to cetaceans makes him an excellent expert for the Shelltone team.<\/p>\n <\/use><\/svg><\/em> @dominicunderwater <\/a>\n\"\"\n

Cathy Lacourbas<\/h2>\n

Cathy, a.k.a. \u00abOcean Shieldmaiden\u00bb, has been committed to protecting the oceans since childhood.<\/strong><\/p>

Founder of the association Breach Antilles<\/em> in 2015, it works to raise awareness of cetacean conservation among disadvantaged young people and supports scientific research in bio-acoustics and ethology.

Collaborating with experts such as Dr Nad\u00e8ge Gandilhon and Pr Herv\u00e9 Glotin, she has co-authored studies on humpback whale songs in the Caribbean. A seasoned sailor, Cathy guides and dives with orcas in Norway for ORCA NORWAY and USEA, and shares her passion thanks to her freediving instructor's certificate obtained in 2023.<\/p>

In 2024, his son Robin took up the torch with \u00abDu Fleuve\u00bb, an eco-responsible whale watching base in Quebec, combining passion, hydrophones and the sharing of observations with research institutes. Together, they embody a family commitment to protecting marine mammals and their environment.<\/p>\n\"\"\n

L\u00e9a Lavagne de Castellan<\/h2>

Member of the Guadeloupe research team<\/strong><\/p>

L\u00e9a has developed a deep understanding of cetaceans, based on trust and respect, over many years in Guadeloupe's waters.<\/p>

A complicity has developed between her and the different species we study, particularly with the sperm whales she calls her \u00abGwo Pwasons\u00bb.<\/p>

She is capable of analyzing the behavior of the different species that inhabit the waters of the Agoa sanctuary, the French marine protected area where we work, and knows how to observe or interact with them without intrusion, with the utmost respect.<\/p>

L\u00e9a is a qualified Agoa sanctuary guide, and has worked as a naturalist guide in the sanctuary. She is particularly sensitive to respectful approaches to cetaceans, both during scientific missions and during cetacean-watching outings organized for tourist groups, so her expertise is very important to our environmental organization.<\/p>\n\"\"\n

Manon joined Shelltone Whale Project, guided by her fascination for large cetaceans. Having grown up near the waters of Brittany, she developed a strong bond with nature and marine ecosystems from an early age. This closeness to the sea has nurtured her passion for preserving marine fauna and habitats.<\/p>

As Community Manager, Manon is the voice and image of the project. She carefully manages the content of our social networks, sharing captivating stories and inspiring images. Thanks to her work, she encourages a wide public to discover the wonders of the sea through eco-responsible outings in harmony with nature.<\/p>
